you can have as many Inventory slots in an Exotic as in any other ship. to max out an exotic to 48 slots (from the base 20) is somewhere in the 3 billion unit range. a strategy is to camp in a Space Station that has 'first wave' spawns for an exotic, you can by and sell those ships over and over and you receive slot upgrades when you scrap them. I've so far never seen any non-rifle multi-tool come close to 24 slots. I've actually seen some large pistol sized rifles with a small amount of slots to match the size, and have kind of assumed that displayed sizes has some bearings on the range of slots it can have. With 4 adjacent slots you're optimizing the amount of boost you're getting. Generally its the optimal arrangement of supercharge slots if you want to max a single technology.
